Oct 07 Station Report
Steve Allison volunteered to
get our EAS system up and running. He’s been here 3 times so far at his
own expense. First he discovered our never used EAS until was not in working
order. It (not Steve) was send back to the manufacturer and repaired to
the tune of $160. Upon return, it was discovered a connector piece was
missing. That piece (Steve is paying for it) should arrive shortly, was
shipped last week. Steve is sure with the piece, the EAS will finally work
right and in FCCC requirements.
We now have a new
day time person thru the DHHR community service program. Lisa Heidebrecht
started work at WYAP the last Wed in Sept. She is a quick learner, is doing
an excellent job with strong potential for growth. It is so wonderful to
have a new voice on the air Monday thru Friday from 9am to around 2p.
Equipment wise, all the
jam gear is now stored in Pete’s shed. Another pair of headphones has broke.
We are down to one good pair. The cheapy Radio Shack units are lasting
about4 months each before crapping out. If anyone sees a heavy duty set
at a yard sale, get em.
Frank T returned to his Sat
night time slot two weeks ago. Once again I got to say, his show is the
most thought out and progressive to boot show we have. See the letter
he penned for stuff he needs for his Freedom Factory show. We have already
installed Snypes on the Surplus 2 puter but it has not been tested as of
yet.
Our CCHS broadcaster Josh
has not returned to the station.
Football broadcasts
are going super.
Our biggest negative right
now is the puter at the transmitter shed. It continues to shut down at
the worst possible times. Most recently on a daily basis. You might remember
in August we switched puters there and installed our bestest, fastest puter
( from surplus). What’s happening is, our audio player shut downs, “buffers”
at the worst possible times. I thought it was a puter problem, hence the
installation of the new puter. Pete thinks it is pee poor Frontier connectivity.
Whatever the case, the new puter is now back at the station and “Bert”
is back at the shed as of Saturday morning at 10am.
We purchased three used
puters in August. Two of those units were sold to other groups and we kept
one. In reality, after selling, donating the two, the new puter cost
us around $25. That puter, Surplus 2 , is doing great. I recommend we purchased
three more and sell two. We have one buyer for sure and a strong possibility
for a third sale right now.
All in all, Sept
was a great month.

Sept 07 Station Report
2007 Summer Jam Final Report
All in all Summer Jam 2007 was a huge
success. We had many accomplishments including: better signage, posters,
a new acoustic roof, a new backdrop, and better volunteer support.
Avis , Jane and I worked every show. Dave worked the crowd at almost every
show. Frank T and Josh T added greatly keeping the audio recording thang
going. Fred, Terri K, and others came thru during the pinch to keep us
on track.
For the musicians the
gas stipend and meal vouchers were well received. Some benevolent musicians
even returned their stipends for reinvestment in the station. Comments
from each musician were positive . New artists (Rich Allen, Dixie Moons,
Holy Cow) were added this year
Crowds grew a little more this summer with a record crowd
of over 150 for the season finale with Avis. Other than grumbles
for louder sound, there were no complaints or “incidents” this season.
We tried to grow economic development
this year with limited success. There were 5 shows where we did not have
any crafter tables. We also wanted some local group to sell hot dogs. Other
than 5 nights, that was a bust.
Issues of note: we need a louder
sound system. Our 100 watts just isn’t big enough to handle the large area
and numbers. Mid season, Pete allowed us use of a PA amplifier which doubled
our output to 250 watts which helped a bunch but still, we need to get
up to 500 or 600 watts of power to handle Summer Jams in the future.
Financially I believe we averaged
about a $100 per week take. That was a little more than was estimated
last Spring but keep in mind, the GKVF grant covered expenses this year.
It was all clear profit for WYAP in 07. That might not be the case in 08.
What’s been learned: It takes
five volunteers each night to make this thing happen. Any less than that,
something suffers. We need to add motorcycle and hot rod theme
nights next year. Someone other than AW needs to handle the crafters.
Some church or other group needs to be secured for concessions (hot dogs).
We need to add outdoor lighting under the roof so as not to blind the musicians.
This was a season for Summer
Jam growth. It was hard work, labor intensive, and hard hot work.
It was also a bunch of fun and without a doubt our best PR of the entire
year.
And finally, the Martin
Luther King All Male chorus has agreed to be our season opener for Summer
Jam 08.

STATION REPORT
July 2007 Summer Jam Report
The addition of the GKVF
grant has helped the Jam series immensely. We hoped to average $85
per night in pop, T Shirt, wa wa, and memberships. We are making the average
and a little bit more. Those dollars will come in handy this winter when
royalties come due.
Ronda Dennis is selling hot dogs and BBQs. She keeps
all the earnings except $5.
Volunteers have made a real difference
this year. Dave mostly and Steve when he’s here, are handling the 50/50
raffles and giveaway tickets. Jane Cook is doing the drinks, memberships
(4 so far), and T shirt sales. Having dedicated people on the parking lot
has made a world of difference this year. On stage Avis has
kept the shows moving along. This year we added typed scripts which has
helped with organization a bunch.
So far rain hasn’t shut
us down. The first night a brief shower slowed us down for about 15 minutes.
With the new roof in place, that problem should be history. The audience
averages about 100 people nightly with around 50 regulars there early.
We are having problems
getting crafters to set up beside the shop. The problem is, I don’t know
those folks and am making few contacts.
Complaint wise, with the addition of larger speakers,
our PA system isn’t loud enough. Using four speakers does little as well.
Next year we need to have a larger PA head, at least 300 watts of performance
should do it.
Also on the down side, the first
two Jams were filled with technical glitches including: no recording of
two shows and one show where the DSL was down and we did not broadcast
on 101.7 FM. The last three shows have been much better with recordings
near studio quality.
With six shows under our belts, Summer Jam 2007 can be
labeled a huge success. AW

Equipment
wise, one of our CD players in the live booth has jammed up a couple times
in the last few months. Although working again compliments of Frank Tobia.
This may be an indication of a need in the very near future
Pete thinks our new puter, Wally 1, is malfunctioning.
Maybe a bad hard drive or other component. May have to call the manufacturer
this week and see what kind of warranty is on it. We purchased the unit
in mid April.
No new programming was added
in May.
Steve Butler ended his regular
morning program when school ended. He said he planned to return next Sept
and during his summer break, plans, to come and do shows as his schedule
allows.
Dr Magly came in last week and
asked about doing some kind of health/medicine show. He is planning to
come in one Saturday night and do an on air piece with Frank. Frank will
contact the Dr and arrange that segment.
The lost microphone.. last Jan…
has been found. I stuffed it in a box and just found it last week.
William finished underpinning
the back side of the station.
Since last Board meeting,
the forced air A/C has been repaired and working very well. With the A/C
working, the entire building is usable. We are keeping the thermo at 85
degrees when no one is there to save on power bills.
In May the carpets were
steam cleaned as well as the one cloth chair.
On Friday June 8th a storm
wiped out electric and DSL service on Triplett. The storm also knocked
WYAP off air around 11:30 am that day. As of June 12th, we remain off the
101.7 FM air. Only the internet stream to Live365 remains active. Pete
thinks the problem is now at the telephone company switch station in Clay.
Roof materials ($650.00) for
the stage were ordered from Lowe’s on Sunday June 11th. Delivery date is
Thursday in the am.

WYAP-LP
Feb was a big month for WYAP. On the plus side, we finished
up the basketball season and two games of post season play. All sponsors
have paid except P. Samples. Will approach that person again this week.
Our sportscasters this year included Dale Mullins, Linda McKinney and Bunnie
Taylor (returning Sportscasters) and new to WYAP Michael Jones and Rev
Thomas. It was a good season. We need to provide them a thank you gift
for our sportscasters, maybe budget that for $40.
Fred and Andy met with audio engineer F Fisher
concerning the EAS set up. After suggestions from Mr Fisher and Bryan French
in Wheeling, the equipment was moved to the station and partially hooked
up. The EAS should be up and working this week.
We have a new volunteer for the morning spot.
Steve Butler has been on the job for two weeks and has done very well,
learning the live booth in less than five days. He plays a mix of country,
bluegrass and rock n roll and commentary Monday thru Fridays from 8 to
10 am. He has also added a Saturday morning live musicians show beginning
at 9am, another first for YAP radio. Steve is a welcome addition to the
station. With Steve a regular fixture each morning, we have
to move the Democracy Now broadcast to another spot. That hasn’t
been done yet.
Dave Derby and Andy continue to volunteer at the station.
More Volunteers needed.
During the cold Feb months the slave computer froze
up and stopped our broadcast. Dave Derby built a wooden enclosure for the
puter, we covered the box with a couple blankets, and added a 100 watt
light bulb for warmth. Total time down was about 3 days.
Equipment wise, we broke a setoff headphones and
are looking to replace them. Cost around $25.00.
We have a problem with the transmitter. Friday
afternoon Andy removed the EAS equipment from the shed and took it to the
station. Sometime during the night Friday, the transmitter shut down. We
successfully restarted the P-Teck Saturday BUT the transmitter did not
go thru the normal start up process. Sunday morning the transy was off
again. Repeated attempts to restart failed. Finally, for an unknown
reason, it restarted but once again without going thru the normal start
up sequence.
This happened in the past, right after we went
on air. Back then it had to be sent back to the manufacturer for repairs.
I believe we might have to send it back to California for repairs.
This could be costly. The shipping charges will be expensive as well.
We are now preparing for Summer Jam 08. the
Apple Festival has asked us to do a live, on air, Summer Jam style show
during the Festival. We have to decide ASAP if we’ve got the man power
to handle that.

Financial Statement presented. A previous
DHHR worker paid off a loan WYAP provided, $200. Mary Morgan from Ohio
mailed in a $50 donation in support of our news programming. Elizabeth
Sampson donated $1000 earmarking it for broadcast royalties, electric bill,
and quarterly insurance payment. Checking account balance is $165. Two
checks ($50 x 2) earmarked for purchase of antenna have not been deposited.
Motion by Dave, second by Dana, motion passed to accept financial report.
The 2007 membership campaign has netted
17 new or returning members. 120 appeal letters were sent out in Jan. 90
more will be sent out in Feb. Fred Sampson covered the postage cost of
both mailings.
Our GKVF grant application was submitted
Feb 1st around 1:30 am. The grant if funded will improve our Summer Jam
shows with: $ for travel stipends, $ for a meal for musicians, table space
for artisans, better stage accommodations, and a master copy CD recording
of each show for the groups.
Andy will apply for a Wall Mart grant
for computers and battery backup. He is also applying for a Dept of Cultures
ADA access grant to build a ramp to the stage.
The 2005 Budget Digest (grant $2000) is finally
ready to be used. Boards priorities assigned: audio recoding equipment,
replace one computer to drive the recorder, and new mics.
The station report was provided by Andy.
Briefly, new PSAs are needed, a local dentist may be interested in supplying
PSAs; Bert the computer was not damaged during the recent freezing temperatures;
Karl Thompson was asked to build a audio reduction box. The furnace thermostat
is set on 50 degrees during the cold spell driving our utilities thru the
roof.
Fred and Andy met with Jim Cercone concerning
engineering work on the high power FCC license. Dr Cercone has agreed to
volunteer engineering work. He will decide what wattage we should apply
for. Discussion on last Saturday meeting with Cercone: need new Bd for
new application ( maybe), amping existing transmitter, coverage areas with
different watts of power, possible interference problems, and use
of circular antennas
Motion by Dana, second by Dave to
secure a $2000 bank loan from the Bank of Gassaway to be repaid by the
Budget Digest grant. Pete will prioritize purchases: 1 or 2 puters, delay
audio box, mixer, recorder, backup gear. Motion passed unanimously.

Feb 2007 WYAP-LP
STATION REPORT
WYAP hosted a live Friday night show with
the Coal Mt Coon Hunters in Jan 2007. After the show WYAP treated
Karl, John, Zach, and Joe to pizza at Ginos. We spent around $32.
We have a second live show planned in Feb with the Calhoun County group.
We have lost one of our 6 good microphones. The cost
was around $90 when purchased new in 2005. Our oldest puter
is now making a sound much like a washing machine. I believe it is the
hard drive going south. The CPU is too old to spend $ on repairs. It is
still working but rest assured it is croaking even as we speak.
WYAP was off the air 36 hours since the last Board meeting
due to extreme cold. The slave puter that drives the transmitter got so
cold, it just quit working. We experienced this anytime the temps went
below 12 degrees. We think the solution is to keep the puter away from
the cold air and have a 100 watt light bulb pointing on the exhaust fan.
Dave Derby built a wooden box and we now have the bulb burning brightly.
I took donation money to purchase the new bulb holder and four spare bulbs.
A second meeting with Jim Cercne was held Feb 10th. Cercne
set up a list of things Andy, Fred and Pete need to provide him. He will
be doing the engineering work himself and not WV Tech.
WYAP was promised Raduga broadcast software by Danny
C? and Tommy Sinner. Emails have been sent but to date, we don’t have the
needed stuff. I trial tested the receiver side of Raduga at home and it
did nicely. Ditto for a second promised circular antenna. No show
yet.
Land owner RT Sizemore disconnected the four outdoor
night lights in mid Jan. Our two outside flood lights kept blowing up when
ice hit them. An aluminum cover has been affixed over new spotlights.
The fix at best is temporary. Prior the cover, we went thru 6 light bulbs
and three flood lights.
During the cold weather, the station thermostat has been
left on 50 degrees overnight. Even doing that and with plastic on the windows
and underpinning, those first few morning hours is freeeeeezin.
New broadcaster Frank Tobia has shown up just one time.
He did call to cancel and that’s a plus. He said his old truck was broke
down.
Local content programming has increased a bunch! Dave
Derby has produced around 40 new PSAs. I added about 15 and Fred provided
5. Each month we need to add 30 or 40 new PSAs to keep the broadcast sounding
fresh, Others are encouraged to participate as well.
Dave Derby and Fred have agreed to donate a total of
$500 for a new antenna. I would like to recommend we divert some of those
funds and hire an engineer to correct the problems with our EAS. I also
recommend we come up with around $60 for a brand new battery backup for
the Triplett Ridge puter. Currently, each time the power blinks off, we
lose our signal.

Corrected minutes from Nov 06
approved by a motion from Fred and a second by Dave. Unanimous vote. There
was not a Dec Board meeting. Instead a Christmas party was held. Cost $33.
Financial report revealed the
group has #121.60 in checking with royalty invoices coming due this month.
Motion by Fred, second by Dana, motion passed to approved the financial
report.
Membership campaign will start this week. Fred and Andy
will mail out membership appeal letters with Fred buying the stamps (donation).
The goal is to have 75 requests out by week’s end.
Discussion on the need to increase on air sponsors. Rates
for on air sponsors will be: one month sponsorship -$20 and $10 for one
month web advertising; 6 month sponsors - $18 per month and $7 per
month for website advertising; and, 12 month sponsors - $15 per month and
$5 per month for website advertising. Motion by Andy, second by Dave,
motion passed unanimously to use the new on air rates, mail the membership
appeal letters, and start the on air sponsors campaign.
Due to poor finances, discussion on
shutting down and regrouping after securing a stronger financial base.
$1400 is needed to stay on air thru May 07. Consensus: Not going
to shut down.
WYAP has a request for the use of the PA system at the
Nutrition site. Consensus: the group can use our “old” PA system if they
agree to fix it up. No vote taken with Andy informing Clay Mullins.
No word yet on the ACT grant
submitted by Andy. Should know something in late March or April.
The deadline for submitting the GKVF grant is Feb 1st. Elizabeth was not
present to give an update. A media justice grant ($40,000 total) will be
applied for this Spring by Andy. WYAP has not applied for the already
awarded 2005 Budget Digest grant. Connie Workman will be contacted to hurry
the paperwork along.
Station report submitted by
Andy. The live booth is working well and no repairs are needed at this
time. New programming (War News Radio, National Lampoon Sports Minute)
have been added to our line up. Frank Tobia is interested in being a volunteer
DJ. The basketball season is underway. Sportscasters this season
are: Dale Mullins, Linda McKinney, Michael Jones, and Rev. Thomas.
Full power FCC license: Andy participated
in a teleconference with Promethesis in Dec. The five day window should
open in March or April. WYAP will need an engineer and lawyer before submitting
the online application. Fred talked with Jim Cercone about doing the engineering
end of the application. Can apply for up to 100,000 watts of power. General
discussion with no votes taken.
Motion by Dave, second by Dana
to elect the existing slate of officers for another term of service. Motion

STATION REPORT
WYAP was able to broadcast nearly the
entire month but with two continuing problems:
1 The unexplained shut down of the WinAmp
player window at the shed continued in Dec . We switched to Media Player
and it appears to be operating without shut down issues.
2 Our audio quality was not stable with some
days sounding slurry and distorted followed by times of absolute clarity.
Output Audio from the Live booth was turned lower. That seemed to help.
We held our Christmas Get together
in Dec. It was a fun time and great chance to do what community radio is
suppose to do, have fun. Several donated to the event. The station
spent about $30 on the affair.
We offered excellent Christmas programming from WMMT
in KY and a program from Pacifica archives. We even received one email
saying as much. That email was mailed out to the Board.
We also hosted the annual year end party Dec 31st. Once
again we had around 25 in attendance including some absolute newcomers
who listen to our station on the net and on 101.7FM. It was nice to hear
from people that enjoy the music and news. We spent $31 on this event with
extra water and cookies etc being used after the party at the station.
We added War News Radio (Swarthmore College) and National
Lampoon’s Sports Minute Shows. During the holidays we added new local
content voices in the PSAs.
CCHS Basketball season is half way complete. So far,
we have missed ¼ of one game and ½ of another game due to
technical glitches. I think those problems are solved. To make up to our
9 sponsors, we are now reading their names during regular news day programming.
The idea is to NOT return any of their $. We added Michael Jones
as a sportscaster this year who does a very professional job. We are still
short one person for boys B Ball games. That is a problem.
The donated antenna remains setting in the shed unused.
The new from E Bay mixer Board in the live booth is doing
very good. Pete needs paid for that item. Pete purchased a
new $100 web cam and installed it Jan 6th. It worked fine until I changed
the web page. The new unit has motion detection and the lens moves
left and right and zooms in on the subject. Cool if I could leave the web
page alone.
Feb is Black History month. We have two black history
programs from Pacifica Radio we plan to air next month. I hope the Board
steps up to the plate and does specialty programming of their own interest
for broadcast.
